East Dayton Christian Church

I have been on a journey for most of my adult life. It is a journey of trying to comprehend God's grace. It began when I was a young man as God began to break down some of my judgmental attitudes by bringing people into my life that helped me understand my own imperfections. Fifteen years ago, a tremendous recovery ministry came to our church, and as I met people who were so grateful for God's grace they could not speak of it without great emotion, I began to realize my great lack of understanding. I read Phillip Yancey's book, "What's So Amazing About Grace?" which led to study, prayer, meditation and further council on this incredible attribute of God. Truth is, God is still teaching me everyday about His wonderful grace.

When you think about it, grace itself isn't the most amazing attribute of God's character. It is what drives grace. What causes God to forgive? What motivated Him to come to this earth, endure ridicule, shed His blood, die a cruel death, raise from the dead. Why is it that God's reaction to my sin isn't to be repulsed, but rather, compassion? The attribute that fuels grace: His love. The most amazing thing about grace is that it is driven by His love.

I John says that "perfect love drives out fear." The result of grace: I don't have to be afraid. I don't have to live in fear that I'm not good enough. I don't have to live in fear that I am not loved. I am not rejected. I am not alone. His perfect love means I can rest in His grace.

His grace, driven by His love brings peace and freedom. That is truly amazing.
